The Latest Trend in Hardscape Layout: Foodscaping

Foodscaping? This is not the strategic arrangement of food on your plate by a chef, or a toddler modeling a volcano out of mashed potatoes ready to wipe out the dinosaur chicken nuggets, much to my disappointment.

Foodscaping refers to a method of gardening in which edible plants are arranged among inedible plants to facilitate growth for all. This concept is not new, but of course Home and Garden has no issue claiming this concept as revolutionary.

So, how exactly does hardscaping fit into the concept of Foodscaping?

Water Distribution: Pavers can help retain water as well as filter water

You can design your hardscape to include raised flowerbeds or step flower beds. Raised flower beds can be helpful in retaining water where the soil is sandy (Virginia Beach, looking at you) and help with drainage where soils have more clay (Hey, RVA!)

If you are really into soil composition, you can use this website to determine the soil composition in your area.

Additionally, using permeable pavers, or pavers that allow water to seep through them and then filter to the watershed below, create less flooding and cleaner water. Our blog on permeable pavers can be found here.

Added Space

Using pavers to create raised beds and step beds create more space for gardening in smaller spaces or where landscapes are elevated. These spaces help with the growth of various plants ensuring they receive enough root space and water.

We cannot wait to help your garden grow! Our design experts can assist you with the integration of gardening in or around your hardscape. We carry a variety of permeable pavers as well that will help with both facilitating plant growth and mitigating flooding.

We have two showroom locations. Our showroom in Virginia Beach is located at 1253 Jensen Drive and our newest location in Richmond is located at 4000 W. Broad Street, Suite 1.
